Art Nouveau: Domestic violence and abuse against women

The Art movement that I have chosen is Art Nouveau. I get inspired and amazed by one of the great artist, Aubrey Beardsley. Most of his works emphasized the decadent, grotesque, and the erotic. I get inspired by one of his works, women with fetuses. He created the drawing related it to their issues at that time, it was about quite a number of Victorian women feared of getting pregnant due to the high chances of maternal deaths in childbirth. Base on my understanding, Art Nouveau is not just about sexuality, it also brings out the message in the artwork.

Thus, the message I try to bring out from my work is that women are not deserve to be abused. I related it to one of our issues, domestic violence and abuse against women; there are 39% of Malaysian women estimated to have been abused by their boyfriend or husband. Physical abuse is damaging and it may cause death. Excluded physical injuries from battering, emotional abuse are often minimized, yet it would cause deep and lasting scars to victims.

In my work, a woman is shedding tears with chapped lips and half-naked, face slightly facing down. It symbolize that the woman is feeling hopelessness, embarrassing, yet dare not to ask others for a helping hand. It is due to most of the victims who have been abused dare not to tell others, mostly is because they feel ashamed and their partner would change the attitudes toward them. A withered rose symbolize the fade of love, and disappoints on love. As physical abuse may cause death to the victim, the rib skeleton is to symbolize the death. A hand holding a knife being the woman is to symbolize that the abuser might just hurt, abuse, or even harm the woman at the most unexpected moment.

Lastly, the main thing I want to emphasize in my work is that domestic violence and abuse against women are not mean to happen. No one should live in fear of the person they love.
